Removing Sludge
Pond sludge removal is common problem in ponds. No matter the pond, it will, at some point, develop a layer of sludge on the bottom. If the sludge becomes too thick, it attracts bacteria that can put the life in your pond at risk. Regular cleaning is necessary to remove this sludge. The way to clean away the sludge is to put in the effort and to use Waste and Sludge Reducer™. WSR™ can help keep your pond looking good and remaining clean for the life inside.
Sludge comes from organic materials. These materials will drop to the bottom, creating a layer over time. The layer grows over time when not removed. Usually, this is not a big problem. A thin layer of sludge will not cause any health concerns for the fish or other life in your pond. You will want to clean pond sludge, obviously, but the thin layer is not a cause for concern just yet. Reducing pond sludge early will take out the various types of organic matter that lie at the bottom. This will remove that thin layer and avoid it from thickening and becoming worse. You can use physical effort to do this. In most cases, for a thin layer of sludge, physical removal is an easy and free solution. As long as you have the appropriate tools and equipment for this, you can manage it within the day. If you find that the layer is too thick or if you want a better solution, though, you may want to use a pond sludge remover. This type of product can remove the sludge in an effective manner. You can see a drastic difference in the pond in a short amount of time.
The reason that you want to clean pond sludge is the lack of oxygen. When there is too much sludge, there is not enough oxygen. The organic material will remove a large amount of the oxygen in the water. This means less oxygen for the healthy bacteria and less oxygen for the fish. Since the healthy bacteria cannot do its job, more sludge and unwanted bacteria piles up. This will continue until removed. If not removed quickly, the fish will die and the pond will suffer. You have to add oxygen back into the environment to counteract the effects of the sludge if you want to have a healthy, attractive pond.
Water Aeration
Aeration plays an important role in reducing pond sludge. This is getting the oxygen back into the environment, improving the levels and removing the sludge. Most people will use an aerator for this task because it is cost effective and efficient. Another option is to use healthy bacteria. Adding healthy bacteria to your pond will help you to clean up in a safe, effective manner. Not only will the bacteria improve oxygen levels, but they will also add to the overall health of the pond. They can assist you in improving the health with minimal additions.
If you find that you already have a problem with sludge, you are going to want to use a pond sludge remover. Waste and Sludge Remover™ uses those healthy bacteria to remove sludge, remove bad odor, and improve the look, feel, and quality of the pond. It is effective in reducing pond sludge. Anyone experiencing problems with pond sludge will want to use this product. Even after physically removing the sludge, this is still a good idea. You may have the smell or the effects still present, which you cannot physically remove. Using this remover is the best option.
This is merely healthy bacteria, not chemicals or anything unnatural. Since it is so simple, you do not have to worry about negative side effects of use. You can start to clean pond sludge without putting the life in your pond at risk and without worrying about the safety of the water. You can begin to see a difference in the water quality quickly, too. This is a great alternative to unsafe options and it will help you in ways that physical removal cannot. You should use a pond sludge remover if you find that there is a serious pond sludge problem.
It is easy to use, too. Following the instructions, you should have everything finished in little time. A pond sludge remover does not require a large amount of time, any expensive equipment, or a large amount of product. While everything does depend on the size of your pond, it is still rather easy to begin using. Thanks to this simplicity, you can experience the advantages of using the remover without dealing with too much stress. Reducing pond sludge is much easier than you might imagine thanks to nature’s healthy bacteria.

Would WSR work on mine sites with heavy sludge ?
Will it reduce sludge at about 5% at a sewage Treatment Plant?

I have a small pond with running stream of surface water and heavy sludge/sediment built over 5 yrs. how do I get rid of this?
When addressing a stream problem, be it poor water quality, low oxygen- or in this case sludge buildup; we have to consider the flow rate. You may not have the “residence time” to address water quality issues. By the time you aerate the water or add most types of beneficial microbes, the water has moved along. That being said, there are two options that I can recommend in this situation.
First, aeration is the least expensive way to address and improve water quality. If you control a long enough section of the stream, you can add aeration upstream and reap the benefits of it all through your property. A small aeration system such as our KR series can be operated for $35-45/month (depending on your local electric rate). The second treatment method for moving water is our Waste & Sludge Reducer pelletized product. It has a dissolve time of 90 minutes, meaning that the microbes in that product will stay onsite longer, and have a much greater opportunity to attach to the substrate (in this case the substrate would be the sludge in the stream). I would recommend trying one of those two options. Call us here at Keeton Industries, we can discuss those options and help you get an idea of what results you should expect.

I have a pond maybe 1/4 -1/2 acre. It was at one time feed by narrual.spring . Previous owner said tge spring must have been blocked . All the trout bellied up. Since than it was never taken care of . That was 20 years ago smel is bad has a whole lot of sludge. I know it is very thick . Maybe a few feet deep about 3 ft from shore. Please help me .
Hi Tammy,
Sludge accumulation is caused by anaerobic (low oxygen) decomposition of the organic wastes in your pond. The addition of a correctly sized and installed aeration system in your pond will supplement the oxygen levels. This will greatly reduce or eliminate the accumulation of the smelly muck in the pond. To speed digestion of the waste products/sludge already in the pond our product Waste & Sludge Reducer is ideal. It will speed up the digestion process for the smelly sludge, increasing the pond depth over a period of months / years if the sludge is from organic waste (leaves, grass clippings, etc.). If the loss in depth is due to sand/gravel etc. being washed into the pond, the microbes will not be successful at eating those particles, because sand and gravel are mineral, not organic.
