Pond Deicing this Winter Can Attract Water Fowl
Keep your pond open this winter with an aeration system. It’s important to install an aeration system during the summer and fall months before winter arrives. Once the unit is installed, it can run through the winter, keeping your pond or lake open and aerated. Keeping the pond open will help keep oxygen in the water, attract water fowl and help prevent fish kills in the spring.
Duck and Goose hunting are long standing traditions in many parts of North America, enjoyed by millions annually. The inability to find a lot of good habitat on public land has forced many waterfowl hunters to purchase or lease hunting properties that are only productive for part of the hunting season. The ponds and lakes that held good numbers of birds in the early season freeze and while the waterfowl may still be in the area they are no longer visiting frozen waters.
Lake bed aeration provides opportunity for both duck and goose hunters to extend their seasons. Traditional duck hunting typically takes place over water using decoys to lure the ducks into gun range. With a large hole opened in the ice by aeration, ducks will not only be pouring into the decoys, but will be landing in a specific area dictated by the placement of the aeration equipment. Although geese are often hunted in the same fashion, geese are often hunted in the hay or grain fields that they feed in. These flocks of geese will roost on nearby ponds and lakes in between feeding. By keeping open water available for them to rest on, geese will not only congregate to your area , but stay longer as well. Lake bed aeration will increase the harvest, extend the season, and give more opportunity to enjoy waterfowl hunting.
